Day 2 continues at Gold Coast Sevens Fever Pitch as final match-ups are unveiled

Day 2 of Gold Coast Sevens Fever Pitch continues as some of the world’s best Rugby Sevens teams fought their way through the semi-finals to secure their place in the final match-ups.

Scotland continued with their determination in the first Shield semi-final against Portugal. After taking all the points in the first half, the Scots delivered right the way through, leaving the Portugal squad scoreless by 33 points to nil.

The USA also looked intent to back up their first win on day 2 as they ran out onto the field against Tonga. The second Shield semi was neck and neck with a tied score at half time.

The United States had one of their most satisfying performances yet, grabbing hold of their first win and knocking Tonga out of the tournament with a 33 – 26 win.

Both eager to secure a place in the Shield Final, Canada and England went head to head with equally powerful performances.

The scores were level when the full time siren sounded but England managed to get past the line to win the final golden point, bringing the total score to 24 – 19.

Next up was the second Bowl semi-final between Wales and Spain, two teams both with the capability of causing an upset. It was another game where the result could go either way with tied scores yet again at half time.

The second half continued to keep the match a guessing game, until an amazing grab for a mid-air ball enabled the Spanish to secure a final try handing them a deserved 26 – 17 win.

France were the first to put the points on the board in a crucial Plate semi-final against the hard-hitting Samoans.

With a 14 point lead at half time the French continued their dominance through until the dying seconds of the match when they were unable to stop the Samoans from landing a try before the final siren.

The final 21 – 7 score was enough to see the French side successfully progress to the Plate final later tonight, whilst the Samoans bid farewell to their Gold Coast Sevens journey.

Luck was not on the Australian’s side in their critical match against Argentina, who crossed for the first two tries.

Argentina continued to add pressure to the Aussie Sevens who, despite scoring two tries, were left behind. Argentina ran away with a remarkable final try knocking the hapless Qantas Men’s Sevens out of the tournament with a 17 – 14 victory.

The matches intensified as the day progressed and final matches loomed. South Africa and defending Champions, Fiji gave the flamboyant crowd much to cheer about in an extremely  entertaining Plate semi-final on the Skilled Park pitch.

The two prominent sides showed off their Rugby Sevens talent, but the try-scoring abilities of the Fijians proved too much for the South African squad who went down 21 – 10.

The game between the Kenyans and the Kiwis didn’t disappoint with scores tied 5 all at half time. The flashy Kenyans proved their worth in their attack and defence but New Zealand’s strength enabled them to power through to a 15 – 5 triumph.

Gold Coast Sevens defending Champions, Fiji will go head to head with New Zealand in the Cup final.

Day 2 of Gold Coast Sevens Fever Pitch continues with the final matches taking place from 5:02 pm at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.
