Australian Qantas Men's Sevens go for Gold as new jersey is launched for Gold Coast Sevens Fever Pitch

Australian Qantas Men’s Sevens captain, Ed Jenkins, today launched a new look Australian Sevens jersey two weeks out from the first round of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series on the Gold Coast.

After donning the Lime in 2011/12 the Qantas Men’s Sevens will step out at Skilled Park on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October in a new Gold strip with Lime trim for their main jersey.

The side will also carry an alternate jersey which is a predominantly Lime colour with Gold trim.

Flanked by Sevens team mates, Shannon Walker and Luke Morahan who were body painted by Always Wicked Art in the new main and alternate jerseys, Jenkins said he was impressed with the new design.

“It is a return to the more traditional Gold compared to last season’s Lime, but it still has a strong Sevens flavour with the brightness and vibrancy of the Gold,” said Jenkins.

“Hopefully the new Gold jersey provides us with a fresh start for the 2012/13 Series and our results will stand out just as much as the jerseys.”

Entering its first official four-year cycle as an Olympic sport, Rugby Sevens has made a name for itself around the world with colourful tournaments delivering carnival type atmospheres.

After making its debut on the Gold Coast last year as part of the internationally acclaimed HSBC Sevens World Series, Jenkins hopes to see even more colour in the crowd in a fortnight’s time.

“Last year the Sevens was new to the Gold Coast, but the 25,000 people that turned up over the two days certainly got into the spirit,” said Jenkins.

“Hopefully this year we’ll see more people in the stands, dressed in colourful fancy dress costumes.

“Maybe some of them will take some inspiration from Shannon and Luke and get body painted in the new jersey to show their support for us.”

Like its 2011 predecessor, the 2012 Gold jersey has been created by ARU’s apparel partner KooGa as part of their Seviin range.

The Seviin range was developed last year specifically for teams playing Rugby Sevens.

Currently Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Romania all wear the Seviin range when competing in the HSBC Sevens World Series.
